English Curriculum

Reading

In Reception and throughout Key Stage 1, we use the Read Write Inc. reading scheme to teach phonics.

Children have daily, fifteen minute streamed phonics sessions plus additional guided reading sessions to develop comprehension skills.

Pupils’ love of reading is fostered through our Key Stage 1 and 2 reading award scheme and our reading buddies project. Every Friday afternoon children share their books with either children from a different year group or the residents of Bushell House.

Writing

Pupils’ writing skills are developed through daily spelling practice, focused grammar and punctuation teaching, exposure to a broad range of genres, a regular ‘Big Write’ and carefully planned topics which provide a wealth of opportunities for cross-curricular writing.

Whenever possible, we provide our pupils with a real purpose for their writing.  All pupils write to their Class Governor each half term and every week, each class has a star writer whose work is published on our website.
